Where Are the Women in Cleantech?

Focuses on women innovators in cleantech and STEM across Africa and MENA, and the steps needed from VCs, accelerators, and public institutions to close the gender gap.

Women are on the frontlines of climate change—but they are still underrepresented in the cleantech and STEM fields that aim to solve it. Across Africa and the MENA region, women-led innovation is rising, but often without visibility, funding, or ecosystem support. At Bridgizz, we believe it’s time to not just empower women—but center them in building our sustainable future.

The Landscape Today

Despite more awareness, women account for less than 30% of cleantech founders and even fewer technical leadership positions in Africa and the Arab world. Funding gaps persist: women receive less than 10% of VC funding in Africa. The data is clear, but the solution requires action—not just analysis.

The Power of Inclusive Innovation

Research shows that diverse teams are more innovative and make better decisions. Women bring unique perspectives to water access, sustainable agriculture, clean cooking, and education. These are not “soft” sectors—they are the core of climate resilience. Bridgizz has seen this through initiatives like Women in Cleantech (with GIZ) and the participation of female founders in ClimateLaunchpad Morocco.

What Needs to Change

  • VCs must commit to gender-lens investing.
  • Incubators should create safe, inclusive spaces for women-led startups.
  • Governments must invest in STEM education and leadership programs for girls.
  • Media and events should feature more women speakers, founders, and thought leaders.

Our Role at Bridgizz

We are building a pipeline of women-led ventures, coaching them, giving them visibility, and advocating for equitable access. Women aren’t just participants in cleantech—they are innovators, leaders, and change agents. They deserve the resources and recognition to lead.
