The Cedar Network, MENA400 and Pakhuis de Zwijger present: Arab Spring: One Year Anniversary.
With speakers from Washington, Berlin and London who will share their views with us on the Arab Spring and how we, as Europeans, can connect with the new upcoming young leaders in the region.
Speaker 1: Gary Weaver, Professor at the America University (Washington DC, USA).
Professor Gary Weaver is a specialist in global conflict and dealt with different conflicts all over the world. He is directing a program for Libyan diplomats at American University and he had to deal with the Arab Spring events in Libya.
His topics range from working in a multicultural workforce, law enforcement in a cultural diverse community, culture shock, and cross-cultural negotiation to conflict resolution, American identity movements and multicultural childcare. For over forty years Gary Weaver has been a member of the faculty of the School of International Service at American University, the largest school of international affairs in the country. He created and directed various academic programs including the Seminar on Managing a Multicultural Workforce, the Fulbright Pre-Academic Program, and the Community Studies Program, an academic program intended to meet the needs of inner city students attending American University. He has also taught courses on multicultural management in the National Training Laboratory’s (NTL) American University graduate program.
Speaker 2: Dr. Nafeez Ahmed (London, UK).
Nafeez Ahmed is a bestselling author and international security analyst. He is Executive Director of the Institute for Policy Research & Development, and has taught international relations theory, contemporary history, empire, and globalization at the School of Global Studies, University of Sussex and Brunel University’s Politics & History Unit.
He has been an expert commentator for BBC News 24, BBC Radio Five Live, BBC World Today, BBC Asian Network, Channel 4, Sky News, C-SPAN, CNN, FOX News, Bloomberg, PBS Foreign Exchange, Al-Jazeera English, among others. Dr Ahmed’s terrorism research was used by the 9/11 Commission, and he testified in US Congress in summer 2005. He has also advised the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst; and the UK Parliamentary Select Committee for Communities on its Inquiry into ‘Prevent’.
Speaker 3: Ali Aslan (Berlin, Germany)
Ali Aslan is a Berlin-based TV journalist and the host of the international talk show “Quadriga” on Deutsche Welle TV. Formerly he was an Advisor at the Press and Information Office of the German Federal Government and an International Affairs Advisor at the Federal Ministry of Finance. In a previous position as a Policy and Media Advisor to the Federal Ministry of Interior, Mr. Aslan was instrumental in creating the “German Islam Conference”, a high-profile government initiative which aims to improve the integration of Muslims into German society. Prior to his involvement in German politics, Mr. Aslan was a TV journalist for ABC News in New York and an International Correspondent for Channel News Asia in Istanbul and Berlin. He started his professional career at CNN in Washington D.C.
Ali Aslan holds a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, and a Master of Science in Journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
